FAST FASHION - YAY OR NAY

FASHION:-

Fashion is a state of mind. A spirit, an extension of one's self. Fashion talks, it can be an understated whisper, a high-energy scream or an all knowing wink with a smile. Most of all the fashion is about being comfortable with yourself, translating self-esteem into a personal style.

Why is it important?

Fashion is a means of self expression that allows people to try on many roles in life. Whether you prefer hip-hop or Chanel-chic, fashion accommodates the chameleon in all of us. It's a way of celebrating the diversity and variety of the world in which we live. Fashion is about change which is necessary to keep life interesting. It's also a mirror of sorts on society. Its a way of measuring a mood that can be useful in many aspects, culturally, socially even psychologically. At the same time, fashion shouldn't be taken too seriously or you lose the fun of it.

FAST FASHION:-

Fast fashion can be defined as cheap, trendy clothing that sample ideas from the catwalk or celebrity culture and turns them into garments in high street stores at breakneck speed to meet consumer demand. The idea is to get the newest styles on the market as fast as possible, so shoppers can snap them up while they are still at the height of their popularity. and then, sadly, discard them after a few wears. It plays into the idea that outfit repeating is a fashion faux pas, and that if you want to stay relevant, you have to sport the latest looks as they happen. It forms a key part of the toxic system of overproduction and consumption that has made fashion one of the largest polluters in the world.

IMAPCT OF FAST FASHION:-

Fashion - a $2.5 trillion sector - is the second most polluting in industry on Earth, right behind oil. The pressure to reduce the costs and speed up production time means that environmental corners are cut in the name of profit. Fast fashion 's negative impact includes the use of cheap, toxic textile dyes - with the fashion industry the second largest polluter of clean water globally after agriculture.

MY OPINIOINS AND SUGGESTIONS:-

In my opinion may be there is nothing intrinsically bad about fast fashion but during it's growth phase, its negative externalities vis-a-via the environment and society were ignored. More over it skews our priorities by taking time and money away from things that we actually need, and encourage a culture of "showiness" and "shallowness".

MINDLESS CONSUMERISM:-

It occurs when you buy without giving a thought. It always turns into excessive consumption results in more stress, more burden, less financial freedom and also the environmental impact.

MASS MARKET:-

It refers to the markets for goods that are produced in large quantities. Ready to wear garments in mass. Cheap material of fabrics creatively used to produce the affordable fashion.

Luckily, we have many options outside of fast fashion and it's possible to find stylish, affordable and ethical clothing if you just know where to look keep there things in mind:-

  • Buy less.
  • Shop thrift.
  • Buy sustainable.
  • Donate.

I love this quote by British designer Vivienne Westwood, "Buy less, choose well, make it last". Buying less is the first, so creating a capsule wardrobe is something well worth considering on your journey.

Choose Well is the second step, and choosing is an eco-friendly fabric is complex as there are pros and cons to all  fibre types, but we have countless material guides to help you, such as denim, linen, cotton and more.

Finally we should make it last and wear our clothes until they are worn out.

  2. You said that fashion is about translating your self esteem into a personal style, and I think that is all we need to inculcate in ourselves to break our habit of giving into fast fashion trends!

  3. "Buy less, choose well, make it last" that is motto I will take out of this blog post. Fast fashion is definitely a nay for me and needs to be stopped at all costs to save our planet
