FAST FASHION - GLOBAL ASPECT

THE GLOBAL IMPACT OF FAST FASHION:-

Fast fashion can be defined as cheap, trendy clothing that samples ideas from the catwalk or celebrity culture and turns then into garments in high street stores at breakneck speed to meet customer demand. Fast fashion is a crucial problem on global, individual and on social grounds. People buy clothes for a particular period of time. These clothes are cheap and made up of low quality materials, hence easy to throw.

There is nothing wrong in admiring fashion but fast fashion is a very harmful concept. It not only damages and pollute the environment but also negatively impacts the psychology of the people.

Fashion has become the second most polluting industry after oil. We are already going through climate change, lets not add one more reason to destroy this beautiful planet.

The major consequence, however, is that it moves from consumers closet to the garbage just as quickly as it is produced. If we look at the pollution statics, we get a clear picture of how fast fashion is impacting globally:-

  • Fast fashion emits 1.2 billion tons of CO2 per year, more than air, travel and shipping combined.
  • Fast Fashion produces 20% of global waste water, contaminating rivers, oceans, drinking water and soil.
  • 60% of clothes are made of synthetic materials derived from petrochemicals. These do not decompose, but rather break down into smaller and smaller microfibers.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO STOP IT:- THE FAST FASHION?

"BUY LESS, CHOOSE WELL, MAKE IT LAST". I not just this quote by Vivienne Westwood, but also believe that it is a best option for one to create a capsule wardrobe.

Buying less, and choosing well is something the best and worth for a great start. Finally, we should make it last and wear out clothes until they are worn out. The only way to effectively fight back it is to undermine the source of fast fashion, the demand. We as a consumer should make the conscious choice. However, our desire for "new" fashion will always exist. For that  we need a new, circular and sustainable model to fulfill our cravings.

  1. I like your suggestions to stop increasing fast fashion. We should definitely have a balance between our needs and wants... and accordingly we should buy less.
