ENVIRONMENTAL CRISIS

 ENVIRONMENT:-

Environment plays an important role in the healthy living of human beings. It matters because it is the only home that human have and it provide air, food and other needs. Humanity's entire life support system depends on the well being of all the environment.

ENVIRONMENTAL CRISIS / CLIMATE CRISIS:-

I define an environmental crisis as a dramatic, unexpected and irreversible worsening of the environment leading to significant welfare losses. So, basically climate change is a change in the pattern of weather and related changes in oceans, land surfaces and ice sheets, occurring over time scales of decades or longer.

WHAT LEADS TO THESE CRISIS:-

1. Burning coal, oil and gas:- It produces carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide.

2. Cutting down forests (deforestation):- Trees help to regulate the climate by absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere, so, when they are cut down, the beneficial effect is lost and carbon stored in the trees is released into the atmosphere adding to the green house effect.

3. Increasing livestock farming:- Cows and sheep produce large amounts of methane when they digest their foods.

4. Fertilizers containing nitrogen:- It produce nitrous oxide omissions.

5. Fluorinated gases:- It produces a very strong warming effect, up to 23000 times greater than CO2.

Human are influencing the climate and earth's temperature by burning fossil fuels, cutting down rain forests and farming livestock which adds up the green house gases which leads to global warming.

CONSEQUENCES:-

Effects on the environment-

1. Habitat destruction:- (a) Ecosystem

                                         (b) Biodiversity loss, species extinction.

2. Extreme weather events:- Heat waves, hurricanes, flood, droughts, wild fires etc.

3. Glacial retreat, ice sheets melt.

4. Sea level rise, costal submersion.

5. Coral bleaching, fish stock decline.

Effects on human:-

1. Human migration and conflict.

2. Flooding of cities and farm land.

3. Crop failure and farmland losses.

4. Direct physical harm to humans.

PUBLIC OPINION:- Finally today's youth is considering this issue and understanding the seriousness of this crisis and coming together to save their mother earth and making it a better place to live in.

Measures to be taken towards this crisis:-

1. 3Rs - reuse, recycle, reduce.

2. Volunteer for the clean ups in our community.

3. Educate - we can help others understand the importance of our natural resources.

4. Conserve water.

5. Choose sustainable.

6. Save electricity.

7. Plant a tree.

8. Don't send chemicals into our water ways.

IMPACT OF FASHION INDUSTRY ON ENVIRONMENT:-

Fashion industry is responsible for 10% of annual global carbon emissions, more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined. At this pace, the fashion industry's greenhouse gas emissions will surge more than 50% by 2030.

It is a challenge for clothing makers to grow without being the enemy of the environment, to become allies of the climate whole also promoting better conditions for the workers in the sector. Some leading brands have answered this call and are working to identigy fiber alternatives and develop more eco friendly processes.

What can consumer do?

Without consumer making a change, the efforts are in vain. They must become aware of what they buy. How? Taking these small steps cam help:-

  • Before buying, ask if the manufacturers used sustainable criteria to make the clothing.
  • Be creative in combining garments and recycle them after they wear out.
  • Repair clothing.
  • Donate what you no longer use.
  • Buy only what you need, In some countries, 40% of purchased clothing is never used.
  • Consider quality over quantity. Every additional year a garment is worn means less pollution. Cheap clothing often doesn't survive the wash cycle, meaning that in the long run you don't save money compared with buying better quality garments.

I would like to end it with a simple line that its high time for our generation to understand the importance of our planet and make wise choice for healthier environment.

Comments

  1. Well written. Really horrifying what the world has come to if we really look closely and to think of we are ourselves part of the problem when we are not thinking about the problem

  2. Very informative content. People now days are blindfolded to their environmental surroundings. It is a high time we look into the matter and monitor our fashion needs. Fashion industry is the second largest polluting industry in the world and each and every individual is responsible for this.
